How does sex education encourage a younger generation to take more precautions when having sex?

I am doing a persuasive speech on sex education, and one of my points is that it encourages a younger generation to take more precautions when they engage in sex, and i need information to back up my point.|||When my son was 12 I sat down with him and had the 'talk'. I did this knowing that I won't be there 24/7 and if he knew about what was out there he would be able to make a decision based on that. Kids will do what they will when there is no adult around and I wanted my son to know the good and the bad resulting in his decision. For example the pill doesn't always work (trust me on this one) and there is soooo much in life to see and do without the responsibility of a child. And what happens if you catch something how is that going to affect you and any possible family life in the future? My son is now 17 and active but because he knows what is what he is very, very careful. I don't approve of it but at least I know that he is informed and he is taking all the steps to protect himself and his partner.|||It depends on the type of education. Secondary socialisation ie. the media teaches them that STI/STD's are common and are around, the downfalls of teenage pregnancy etc. There are so many documentaries outlining the risk of STI/STD's and teenage pregnancy that are aimed at the younger generation they would be stupid to not know.

In some schools they only teach abstinence as a sex education but if you're talking about comprehensive sex education where birth control is promoted (all different kinds of birth control) etc then it encourages them to realise there are different and effective ways of preventing unwanted pregnancies and STI/STD's and hopefully encouraging these people to practice safe sex.|||it informs them about what happens if they have sex, and proves that sex is not a dirty heinous thing.

i think that teaching abstinence (sp) in school is disgusting. why should we teach kids about one way of doing things? kids are gonna have sex, this is the 2000's, dammit! most teens rebel. because of that, they need to be informed about the risks of sex, and what can happen if you choose to have sex.|||The other users said many good points, but I would like to add onto the first answer.

In sex-ed at school, they showed us a tape of a woman giving birth.

I can say it scared the sh*t out of every single one of us.|||it teaches them about contraception, how to use it and the consequences of not using it.

it teaches the side effects of STDs/STIs.

it tells people the age of consent where they are.

hope this helps :)|||Its better than telling them not to have sex! Because youth will rebel against what you say you dont do.

**PROMOTE SAFE SEX**|||It scares them because they dont want to be pregnant?
